FairVote

FairVote, based in the Washington D.C. area, is a nonpartisan champion of electoral reforms that gives voters greater choice, a stronger voice, and a representative democracy that works for all Americans.

JGrill Consulting worked with FairVote on communications and media consulting throughout the state of Kansas in 2020. JGrill Consulting developed and executed a media campaign to raise awareness about the role Ranked Choice Voting (“RCV”) would play in the 2020 Democratic Presidential Primary Election in Kansas. This election was the first time the state of Kansas had ever used RCV. This included telling the story of RCV in Kansas through media releases and direct media outreach, promoting Kansas voices on RCV, prominent earned statewide news coverage, rapid response and communications, voter education pieces, influencer management and advising on strategic messaging throughout the length of the consulting relationship.

During this engagement, JGrill Consulting drafted and sent out press releases and advisories to targeted media, placed letters to the editors throughout the state, penned Op-Eds that ran in major markets, advised on key strategies with many moving parts on candidates in the race and the evolving narratives around Covid-19 including mail-in voting and ballots, spoke on the record to print reporters numerous times, conducted and was interviewed on many radio shows and helped push the overall value of Ranked Choice Voting throughout the state.

Ranked Choice Voting in Kansas was a major success even as Covid-19 began to take root and define many aspects of media coverage.  Voter turnout was three and a half times the turnout from the 2016 caucuses in Kansas, with nearly 147,000 ballots cast in the Democratic Presidential Primary compared to 39,230 cast in 2016.
